Life Built Well

My Morning Routine and Why I’m Proud of It

My mornings are built around simple habits that help me feel clean, strong, grounded, and ready for the day. I begin with a tongue scraper, a warm salt-water gargle, brushing my teeth, and a warm lemon drink. Then I move into 12–15 minutes of stretching and exercise, a short walk with sunlight if possible, a nutritious breakfast, and a short devotion and Bible-reading time. I also try not to look at any tech, especially my phone, for at least the first hour after waking.

A routine that supports body, mind, and spirit

I’m proud of this routine because it is simple, realistic, and consistent. It does not depend on having a perfect morning. It gives me a clean start, movement, fresh air, nourishing food, and a grounded spiritual beginning for the day. I haven’t had a cold, flu, or been sick for well over a year now, and I believe this routine has helped.

1. Clean start

Wake-up oral-care routine

Another important part of my morning starts right after waking up. I use a tongue scraper first, then gargle warm salt water from about a quarter of a glass without swallowing it, brush my teeth, and drink a warm mix of half a cup of water with some lemon juice.

  • Tongue scraper first
  • Warm salt-water gargle
  • Brush teeth
  • Warm lemon water
2. Move first

12–15 minutes of exercise and stretching

I begin the active part of the morning with a short block of movement. It helps wake up my body, loosen tight areas, improve circulation, and set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

  • Gentle mobility and stretching
  • Simple floor-based positions and holds
  • A realistic routine I can keep doing consistently
3. Get outside

12–15 minute walk with sunlight if possible

After moving indoors, I like to step outside for a short walk. Fresh air, natural light, and a change of scenery help me feel more awake, calm, and mentally ready for the day ahead.

  • Fresh air and outdoor light
  • A calm transition into the day
  • A simple way to build consistency
4. Fuel well

A nutritious breakfast

Breakfast is an important part of my morning because it gives me steady fuel. My breakfasts often include yoghurt, cereal or muesli, fruit, nuts, plant-based protein powder and sometimes toast or a warm drink. It helps me feel ready and well-supported.

  • Nutritious foods that feel sustainable
  • Fruit, nuts, yoghurt, and other simple staples
  • A consistent habit rather than an afterthought
5. Start grounded

Short devotion and time in God’s word

One of the most meaningful parts of my routine is a short time of devotion and reading God’s word. It helps center my thinking, shape my perspective, and begin the day with peace rather than rush.

  • A quiet spiritual foundation
  • Stillness before the busyness of the day
  • A reminder of what matters most
Why I’m proud of it

Small habits that add up

I’m proud of this routine because it reflects consistency, discipline, gratitude, health, and faith. It is not flashy, but it is real. From oral care to movement to breakfast to devotion, it helps me take care of myself in a balanced way.

  • A clean and refreshing start
  • Movement for my body
  • Fresh air and light
  • Nourishment and spiritual grounding

My approach to technology in the morning

One important part of my routine is what I do not do. I generally avoid looking at any technology, especially my phone, for at least the first hour after waking up.

Why I avoid my phone early

I have found that checking messages, emails, or notifications first thing in the morning can quickly overwhelm your mind and shift your focus away from a calm and intentional start. Keeping tech away gives me room to begin the day with clarity.

  • Keeps my mind clear and calm
  • Prevents early stress from notifications
  • Allows me to focus on my routine first
  • Helps me start the day on my terms
“Starting the day without technology helps me think clearly before the world starts asking things of me.”

What this routine gives me

A morning routine does not need to be complicated to be meaningful. For me, these habits help me start the day feeling refreshed, physically awake, mentally settled, and spiritually grounded.

“A good morning routine doesn’t need to be extreme. It just needs to be meaningful enough that you want to keep showing up for it.”

My sleep routine the night before

A good morning actually starts the night before. I try to get to bed before 10pm and create an environment that helps me wind down properly. My phone is not kept in my bedroom, and I use an Amazon Echo device to play the radio for about 25 minutes to help me get off to sleep. It is also set with my morning alarm.

Early sleep

Getting to bed before 10pm

Going to bed early helps me wake up feeling more refreshed and ready to follow through with my morning routine.

  • Better energy in the morning
  • More consistent routine

No phone in bedroom

Keeping my phone out of the room

I do not keep my phone in my bedroom. This removes distraction and helps me disconnect properly before sleep.

I also follow a simple approach to food. You can see examples here: 10 simple healthy meals I actually eat.
